Map the Sewintists goes live!

View Map the Sewintists in a larger map

I had a brain wave yesterday morning while I was supposed to be herding kids out to the car for a road trip to Ontario:  how can sewing and crafty people find each other IRL and never miss another meetup?

I quickly slapped together that post, and thanks to Shannon for pointing me in the right direction, and to Gillian for being my first tester, we're ready to go live!

Here's how to participate:

Open this link to get to Map the Sewintists
Click on the red Edit button on the left
Click on the blue pin on the upper left of the map
Click on your location to drop the pin
A box will open that will allow you to add your name or blog URL in rich text
Save et voilĂ !
**********update from users:  it appears that you cannot pin if you are using a mobile device / tablet; also, you may need to use Firefox since other browsers may not work; finally, you must be signed into your google account.  If worse comes to worst and you can't pin after trying all this, just comment below with your location and info you want to include, and I'll pin you!

I would strongly advise people to only pin their general location or closest city, since we don`t want creepers peeping in our windows while we sew in our unders, do we?

Gillian and I have also added some fabric shopping locations around the world, so please share your collective wisdom!  I'm going to start spreading the word online.  If you like the idea, please reblog so that we can get the word out to everyone who feels isolated from the "cool kids" in NYC and London  ;)

Hopefully this will develop into a useful resource for all of us around the world.

    1. P.S. Would you mind if we post about the map on our own blogs to help spread the word?

    2. Yes yes yes! Please do! I don't have many followers, so the more people that reblog / retweet / retell the faster we can fill up the map!

(On the map, you can click the link button and copy and paste the html for the map, customize it's look, and embed in your blog.)

  4. Sigh - I think I screwed up your map, I'm afraid - I tried to put my marker in where I am (close to Binghamton, NY) and it ended up in the Atlantic Ocean. And I don't know how to fix it. Sorry. :(

    1. Just click on edit again, then choose the errant pin and click it. It then opens up the box and gives you the chance to move or delete the pin. Thanks for participating!

    2. Ahh, I was having this problem too. You have to make sure you're signed into your Google account or it won't show up. Great idea by the way! I'm going to add myself now! :)

  10. Brilliant idea! Love it. :-)

(Also, for those having trouble finding the 'edit' button - I couldn't get it showing up while using Chrome, but it showed fine in Firefox. Ahhh, technology. So great when it works. So confusing when it doesn't for no particular reason.)

  11. What a great idea! I pinned myself. As I said, I'm not going to hold my breath about finding many others, but maybe this will help find other Yukon sewists! And it could be great for getting fabric shopping advice or meeting up with others when travelling. :)

  19. Great idea! I have already started adding in all my favorite (and even not so favorite) fabric stores here in Manila, Philippines where I live.

  23. geez that was hard! what is up with these non playing browsers?! i had to resort to safari, and that worked... will reblog this week, this is SUCH a cool idea.

and now you've got me wanting a bunsen burner.

    1. You can never hope to be a mad scientist without a burner!

(I've been trying to manipulate the map on my phone, and it truly is a PITA. Deviate in the slightest and you end up pinning yourself in the middle of the arctic ocean)

    1. Also is it just me or do the people only show up when you change the pages.. everyone is split over page numbers? Does this make any sense? haha

      Delete
    2. Yes, I didn't expect that, but it appears that 100 pins is the max; then it creates a second page. It's kind of a PITA, but I have no idea if it can be modified. Help anyone?

  30. Holy moley...I crashed the computer doing this : ) I apologize if I left flags everywhere. This is terribly cool!

  31. I love it - and had no problem pinning! Pam from pammieandtheps in Ventura, CA!

  32. I'm always on my mobile so can't pin from there. Would love it if you could pin me for Sydney Australia - Janelle aka Sew Hopeful from sewhopefull.blogspot.com.au. And this is a brilliant idea. Thanks!

  34. Thank you for introducing me to a new word. I shall now think of myself as sewintist rather than a sewist or sew-er.

  35. This is such a great idea-- I put mine on, and am anxiously waiting to see if there's anyone else in my entire state who sews!

  38. I'm not sure if I am technically inept or what, but I cannot get this to work for the life of me! (Or at least not to save anything once I put it on there?) I'm in Madison, WI and my blog URL is sewingforreallife.blogspot.com. Silly computer! :(

    ReplyDelete
  39. For some reason I was also inept when I tried to do this the other day, but bingo! It worked today - great idea. (I think being logged in to Google was the key difference ;-) )

  40. Marvelous idea! Just put myself on there to make Southern Indiana look slightly less like a wasteland.

  45. This is such a great idea, thank you so much for doing this!! I'm honoured to call myself a Sewintist!
By the way, if anyone is confused I tried to pin myself and couldn't see my pin and thought that it hadn't worked... it took me a while to realise that my pin was on the third page.
    (I've 'reblogged' it here: http://therecklessneedle.blogspot.ie/2013/02/im-sewintist.html)

  46. Brilliant idea! Added my pin plus found another sewster in Tel Aviv. Weirdly, I can see her pin in the embedded map above but not in the full map page, and yes, I tried all 3 pages :-\ Anyway, very glad to be a part of this :)

    1. I would try all the things listed above in the instructions and *updates from readers sections. Try different browsers; make sure you're logged into google; check if there is a small arrow button on the left hand side that will open the editing column when clicked. If still nothing works, then post your info here and I'll add you!

  50. Added myself! It's so funny I found this post, actually, because a friend and I are trying to start a sewing community website for meetups and such.. if you'd like to check it out: http://www.unitedfashionsewers.com

There's not much on it at the moment, but hopefully it picks up! ;)

    Have a great weekend!

    1. As I said above, there are so many pins that google has made 4 pages of maps to accommodate all of us. You'll have to check each page until I get the code sorted. I know some people are confused, so I typed the info on the map description as well.

    1. I'm on the map too. Simple but wonderful idea. Was great to discover a fellow Irelander.
Cheekily - or helpfully, I hope you'll think - I removed some "Placemark 201's". Some of them were in the sea, some were next to another pin, but even so it's not enough information to just have a placemark or pin - we want to know *who* the sewintists are (even if just by a code name!
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to differentiate between shops and people/bloggers/sewintists? I volunteer to change the shop pins and to update a little note in the directions. If you wish, let me know.
Re the pages thing, don't know at this point how to solve that problem. I'll sleep on it!
      Yours, hopefully helpfully, RĂłisĂn
